When Lewis’s past catches up to him, he needs the kind of help that only Peter Ash can provide.
In this propulsive new thriller from the bestselling and award-winning author Nick Petrie, Peter Ash must follow his closest friend Lewis into the criminal underworld when secrets from the past threaten everything they hold dear.
Lewis has helped Peter Ash out of more trouble than he cares to remember. So Peter doesn’t hesitate when Lewis asks a favor in return. Lewis has left his criminal past behind, but a former associate may be in trouble, and he and Peter must drive into the teeth of a blizzard to find him. When they find blood in the snow and a smoldering cabin, both men know things are bad. Then they learn that someone has stolen notebooks full of incriminating secrets about Lewis’s long ago crimes, and realize the situation is much worse than they’d thought.
To save Lewis’s wife, Dinah, and her two boys, Lewis and Peter must find the notebooks. With June Cassidy, they begin the search—facing ruthless and violent foes at each turn, including one powerful person who will stop at nothing for revenge. Will Peter and Lewis be able to keep the dark past buried? Or will they need to step into the darkness to save the people they love most?
Although my tour is still being put together, I do have a few events to share now.
The Midwest Mystery Conference in Chicago (November 11, 2023) is an intimate one-day event. If you’re new to crime fiction conferences, and if you’re within a few hours of downtown Chicago, the MMC is a good place to dip your toe in. It’s an affordable opportunity to meet some of your favorite authors and find new ones, too.
I’ll be at the Southwest Florida Reading Festival on March 2nd, 2024. It’s my first time, and I’m very much looking forward to it. Turns out I have a lot of Florida readers! If you’re in the area, please stop by and say hello!
I’ve been invited back to the Tucson Festival of Books (TFoB) on March 9-10, 2024. This huge festival is one of my favorites, with top-notch authors of everything from crime fiction to cookbooks to children’s literature. In the past, I’ve been on panels with C.J. Box and William Kent Krueger – this is the big time. Plus, Tucson in March is spectacular. See you there, I hope!

“Downright frightening fun…This is one hellacious ride for crime fiction fans.” – Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
War veteran Peter Ash is driving through northern Nebraska when he encounters a young pregnant woman alone on a gravel road, her car dead. Peter offers her a lift, but what begins as an act of kindness soon turns into a deadly cat-and-mouse chase across the lonely highways with the woman’s vicious ex-cop husband hot on their trail. The pregnant woman has seen something she was never meant to see . . . but protecting her might prove to be more than Peter can handle.
In order to save the woman and himself, Peter must use everything he has learned during his time as a Marine, including his knowledge of human nature, in order to escape a ruthless killer with instincts and skills that match—and perhaps exceed—Peter’s own.
“Explosive and engaging! Fasten your seatbelt, this is going to be a wild ride.”
Lisa Gardner
“Petrie has a preternatural talent for ratcheting up suspense, even as he ensures readers continue to care not only about [Peter] Ash, but also about the people he’s trying to save, as well as the ones he must defend against.”
the new york times
“There’s an emotional intensity here that’s new and startling… Petrie creates fully fleshed, likable people only to blow them away in explosions of blood and bone, and the book itself seems to vibrate from the shock. This is a lava-flow of action, and a rich reading experience as well.”
Booklist
“Nail-biting …Shifting points of view serve to heighten the suspense. This adrenaline-fueled ride will keep readers turning the pages.”
A man wanted by two governments, Peter Ash has found a simple, low-profile life in Milwaukee, living with his girlfriend June and renovating old buildings with his friend Lewis. Staying out of trouble is the key to preserving this fragile peace . . . but when Peter spots a suspicious armed man walking into a crowded market, he knows he can’t stand by and do nothing.
Peter does interrupt a crime, but it wasn’t at all what he’d expected. The young gunman appeared to have one target and one mission–but when he escapes, and his victim vanishes before police arrive, it seems there is more to the encounter than meets the eye. Peter’s hunch is proven correct when a powerful associate from his past appears with an interest in the crime, and an irresistible offer: if he and June solve this mystery, Peter’s record will be scrubbed clean.
While Peter and Lewis trace the gunman, reporter June digs into the victim of the incident, a man whose face rings a bell in her memory. As their parallel investigations draw together, they’re thrust into the path of a ruthless tech thief, an eerily cheerful assassin, a brilliant and troubled inventor, and a revolutionary technology that could wreak devastation in the wrong hands. But for Peter, even more is at stake: this investigation is his only path to a life free from the threat of prosecution or prison. Before the end, he’ll have to fight harder than ever before to ensure that freedom doesn’t come at too high a cost.
“What seems simple and predictable turns complex and surprising in this thriller, the sixth in the Peter Ash series. The swiftly paced, action-dominated plot rushes headlong from its outset…Brisk, terse, and diverting.”
Kirkus Reviews
“Nonstop action at a machine gun pace. If you aren’t reading Nick Petrie, now is the time to start.”
C.J. Box
“Another outstanding offering in the celebrated Peter Ash series, with Nick Petrie’s trademark complex and fascinating characters inhabiting a tightly woven story that will keep thriller lovers riveted. The hype about Nick Petrie is real- he’s just that damn good!”
“This kinetic, breathless masterpiece illustrates why Petrie is here to stay.” – Publisher’s Weekly, starred review
War veteran Peter Ash tracks a murderer and his criminal family through the most forbidding and stark landscape he has ever encountered, in the 5th thriller from the bestselling author of The Drifter.
Losing ground in his fight against post-traumatic claustrophobia, war veteran Peter Ash has no intention of getting on an airplane–until a grieving woman asks Peter to find her eight-year-old grandson. The woman’s daughter has been murdered. Erik, the dead daughter’s husband, is the sole suspect, and he has taken his young son and fled to Iceland for the protection of Erik’s lawless family.
Finding the boy becomes more complicated when Peter is met at the airport by a man from the United States Embassy. For reasons both unknown and unofficial, it seems that Peter’s own government doesn’t want him in Iceland. The police give Peter two days of sightseeing in Reykjavik before he must report back for the first available seat home. . . and when they realize Peter isn’t going home until he accomplishes his mission, they start hunting him, too.
From the northernmost European capital to a rustbound fishing vessel to a remote farm a stone’s throw from the arctic, Peter must confront his growing PTSD and the most powerful Icelandic snowstorm in a generation to find a killer, save an eight-year-old boy, and keep himself out of an Icelandic prison–or a cold Icelandic grave.
“If you’re not already on the Peter Ash train, jump aboard now. The Wild One is a beautifully written novel, rich with deep, complex characters, full-throttle action, and a superbly realized setting. Nick Petrie is doing headliner work, folks.” – Robert Crais, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Dangerous Man
“Nick Petrie’s exceptional writing has earned him comparisons to many of the thriller-genre’s greats, but The Wild One announces that period has come to an end. Petrie is setting the bar, not reaching it.” – Michael Koryta, New York Times bestselling author of Those Who Wish Me Dead
“Readers of earlier Ash novels recognize the setup for a wild ride; this novel delivers it times four. The trail leads to Iceland, letting Petrie display his gift for vivid, visceral prose.” – Booklist
“If you haven’t met unstoppable vigilante Peter Ash yet, The Wild One is an introduction you won’t forget. … With The Wild One, he succeeds in making Iceland feel like a character, mapping a landscape that’s as rugged, unforgiving, and authentic as the local delicacy, fermented shark. As Ash pursues his mission with a feral intensity that crackles and burns, we found ourselves struggling to put the book down and get anything done.” – Apple Books Review
“The ensuing adventure [includes] dramatic plot twists and swerving storylines that climax into a stunning crescendo, marking The Wild One as the most explosive and well-written adventure in a must-read series that debuted in 2016 with The Drifter”. – The Shepherd Express
“This novel is a must for your TBR pile.” – Lima Charlie Review
